Highlights for Year 2 of the Books & Beyond project

  1. Kicked of the year 2 of the project by bringing 16 Newark Collegiate Academy students to IU for a story writing weekend. We must give a big thanks to RPS who funded travel and meals for the NCA students and teachers.
  2. Held three successful fundraisers at Mother Bear’s Pizza,  Village Deli and Max’s Place and conducted 15 presentations, raising  over $15,000.
  3. Conducted a successful on-line fundraiser through Kickstarter.com which raised over $5,000.
  4. Continued English language lessons for the teachers at Kabwende Primary School through April 2010. These lessons helped the teachers pass the government mandated English pre-test in early fall. (75% of teachers passed).
  5. Received amazing press with articles in the IDS, College Magazine, CampusLink Newsletter and on Grio.com
  6. Received the State Farm Grant for $25,000 which will cover the cost for NCA students to travel IU in the fall; GV students to go to NCA in the Spring; and, for printing of our new book focused on the theme of conservation.
  7. Began collaboration discussions with Kelley Living-Learning Center and the Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER).
  8. Identified by Fraternity Sigma Alpha Mu (SAMMY) as a local project in need of support. SAMMY will be raising money next fall to pay for bikes for the Kabwende Primary School teachers.
  9. Presented at our first conference, the Freshman Year Experience Conference in February 2010.
  10. Completed 18 collaborative stories authored by the GV and NCA writing partners and included two stories completed by TEAM Schools 6th graders.
  11. Completed a video based on the 2010 Newark Trip. The video can be viewed at
  12. Applied and accepted to present at the Columbia University Teacher’s College Peace & Justice Conference in April 2010.
