The Books & Beyond Project Announces the Release of “The World is Our Home, Vol. 2”

Books will be distributed to Kabwende Primary Center students on June 23, 2010

Bloomington, IN, USA— June 4, 2010—
Established in 2008, The Books & Beyond Project is a collaborative service-learning project that connects the Kabwende Primary Center (KPC) (Kinigi, Rwanda), Indiana University’s Global Village Living-Learning Center (Bloomington, IN, USA), and TEAM Schools (Newark, NJ, USA). The project fosters critical thinking skills as students author, illustrate, publish and market an anthology of children’s stories. The stories are used as a tool to aid in teaching English to the students at the Kabwende Primary School. The students from KPC put their English skills to use by writing stories of their own which are combined with the stories written in the U.S., creating a cross-cultural anthology.

This year’s volume contains 47 stories written by Rwandan and U.S. schoolchildren. The children have shared their experiences with conservation and protecting the earth. They have also written stories sharing their everyday lives with each other.

Books& Beyond is a three point triangular collaboration; all points are of equal importance.

Point 1. Indiana University Global Village Living-Learning Center is a residence hall for students who are interested in
learning about languages, cultures and global issues.

Point 2. TEAM Schools, in Newark, NJ, having a 96% African American student body. TEAM is in the network of KIPP
Charter Schools. TEAM students are from Newark where only 9% of the population has attended college.

Point 3. Kabwende Primary Center (KPC) has 2,000 students ranging in age from 5 to 17.
