Dear Friends of Books & Beyond,
As you know, five representatives from Indiana University and TEAM School ‘s Books & Beyond project traveled to Rwanda this summer to bring the second volume of “The World Is Our Home” to the Kabwende Primary Center. In addition to giving all 2050 students and teachers at the Kabwende Primary Center their own copy of the book the team also:
*Held two-days of writing workshops with 31 Kabwende Primary Center students in grades P5 and P6. The Kabwende Primary Center writers received mentoring in writing and illustrating from 6 Apicur Secondary School students. Twelve of the stories will be included in “The World Is Our Home: Volume 3” which will be published in Summer 2011.
*Provided teacher training workshops to the 29 Kabwende Primary Center teachers on using the “World Is Our Home” as a text book to teach critical literacy.
*Met with local and national representatives from the Rwandan Ministry of Education who strongly encouraged Books & Beyond to expand to one additional primary school in Rwanda each year, hold a competition for the best Rwandan stories, and develop Kabwende Primary Center as a model for teaching and learning in the country.
*Met with representatives from USAID and International Education Exchange to discuss educational initiatives planned for Rwanda and brainstorm opportunities for collaboration with Books & Beyond.
Books & Beyond is building momentum in Rwanda. This trip increased the project’s legitimacy and recognition within the country and strengthened the relationships between the US and Rwandan project coordinators. Thanks to dedication of Indiana University Global Village Living-Learning Center , Kabwende Primary Center, and Team School students, IU College of Arts & Sciences, and the IU School of Education this project continues to be a model for engaging students in a cross-cultural, literacy-based exchange.
