This summer, Books & Beyond (www.iub.edu/~booksb) will be holding a three-week summer camp at Kabwende Primary School (16 July – 3 August). With the goal of working with 200 P4 and P5 students, the camp will focus on creative writing, English conversation, and critical thinking skills. During the three weeks, students will learn methods for writing stories, use theater to practice English reading and conversation, and build cross-cultural relationships with students from the United States. Camp will culminate with a story writing competition in which Kabwende Primary students can enter one story for possible publication in the Books & Beyond Year 5 anthology.
Established in 2008, The Books & Beyond Project is a collaborative service-learning project that connects the Kabwende Primary School (Kinigi, Rwanda), Indiana University’s Global Village Living-Learning Center (Bloomington, IN, USA), and TEAM Schools (Newark, NJ, USA). The project fosters critical thinking skills as students work together to write, illustrate, publish and market an anthology of children’s stories. The stories are used as a tool in teaching English to the students at the Kabwende Primary School. The students from Kabwende Primary School put their English skills to use by writing stories of their own which are combined with the stories written in the U.S., creating a cross-cultural anthology.
“The World is Our Home, Vol. 4” will be distributed to Kabwende Primary School students on July 12, 2012. This year’s volume contains 28 stories written by Rwandan and U.S. students. The students have shared their everyday lives with each other. Including this fourth volume, Books & Beyond has delivered 8,000 books to school children at the Kabwende Primary School.
I welcome you to join us at the Books & Beyond Kabwende Holiday Camp and observe the project in action. Camp will run 16 July -3 August from 9:00-12:00 and 14:00-17:00 each weekday. Please let me know when you are available to come to Kinigi.
