Muraho (hello) from Rwanda! The volunteers of Books & Beyond have been extremely busy since arriving to Rwanda. They have been creating lesson plans for the holiday camp, practicing Kinyrwanda, enjoying local culture, and getting to know the students of Kabwende Primary School. This week The World is Our Home: Volume IV was delivered to the students and it was a powerful experience for all of our volunteers.
A’kayla Williams (TEAM Academy): When I first handed out the books it felt so good, because we were doing something truly amazing. The way the kids smiled was awesome. I never knew a book could be so great and I will never take a book for granted again.
Jason Odoom (TEAM Academy): Handing out books to the students at Kabwende Primary School was a great feeling. The children were happy and running to meet and greet us, ready to receive their book. I felt like I committed an acct that was definitely worthwhile. Now I see the effect Books & beyond has every year among the live of the Rwandan students.
Along with passing out books, volunteers distributed backpacks to the students of the Kabwende Holiday Camp. The backpacks were provided by the project Schoolbags for Kids which sent a representative to meet the Books & Beyond crew in Rwanda. We are grateful for this new friendship and happy that our organizations could join together for Kabwende.
The TEAM Academy students have left to continue their travels in Kenya. IU students are continuing to work on lesson plans for camp and are enjoying the chance to teach the students various skills is writing, reading, and kinesthetics. This weekend, IU students will be traveling to Lake Kivu for a few days of much needed relation. Thank you for reading and stay tuned for more updates!
