June 21, 2009 – July 4, 2009: Rwanda Trip

A delegation of Indiana University, Newark Collegiate Academy, and TEAM students and teachers  traveled to Rwanda to deliver the books to Kabwende Primary school. To read a student blog about the trip click here.  (scroll down on page to access 2009 trip)

May 2009: First Book Published

The World is Our Home Volume I is published.

March 13, 2009 – March 18, 2009: Spring Break trip to Newark

Indiana University students traveled to Newark, New Jersey to complete their stories and learn about TEAM schools. To watch a video recap of the trip click here.

February 18, 2009: Editing Workshop

Global Village students attended a workshop led by the School of Education’s Alex Weinstein. Alex led the students in a free writing activity to begin a discussion about the structure of a story and its relation to the general theme of the books for the year: “home.” Students shared their free writing responses and discussed how the stories should be organized in more detail.

January 16, 2009: Illustration Workshop

Indiana University students met with illustrator Mark Ryan at the school of education to learn about illustrating techniques while teleconferencing with their New Jersey writing partners.

 November 15, 2008: Writing Workshop and Video Teleconferencing

Indiana University students met with Professor Beth Samuelson at the school of education to learn about writing culturally sensitive/relevant stories while teleconferencing with their New Jersey writing partners.

November 5, 2008: Movie Screening: Ghosts of Rwanda

Global Village Books & Beyond participants view the Frontline documentary Ghosts of Rwanda. A discussion about the film and the Rwandan genocide also took place. More information about the documentary may can be found  here.

November 2, 2008: Mentoring Workshop II

 Global Village Books & Beyond participants attended a workshop led by Bob Valentine and discussed specific responsibilities and challenges of being a mentor. 

October 19, 2008: Mentoring Workshop I

Global Village Books & Beyond participants attended a workshop led by Bob Vantine from the Office of Mentoring and Leadership at Indiana University.

September 28, 2008: Books & Beyond Kickoff at the Global Village LLC, Indiana University

TEAM Teachers Ali Nagle and Ben Cope visited Indiana University along with Books & Beyond visionary Nancy Uslan to introduce interested Global Village students to the Books & Beyond Project.
