July 2010: Rwanda Trip

A delegation of 5 US representatives of Books & Beyond including students and teachers traveled to Rwanda to deliver the second volume of The World is Our Home. During this trip, the delegation met with representatives from IEE and USAID in Rwanda. Click here to read a recap of the trip by Lauren Caldarera.

May 2010: Second Book Published

The World Is Our Home: Volume II was published.

April 2010:  Columbia University Teacher’s College Peace & Justice Conference

Global Village Books & Beyond participants applied and were accepted to present at this conference.

April 2010: English Language Lessons for Kabwende Primary Center

Kabwende Primary Center teachers took English lessons to prepare for the government mandated English pre-test. 

February 2010: Received State Farm Grant

Books & Beyond received $25,000 from the State Farm Youth Advisory Board. The funds helped to establish an evaluation team for the project and contributed to covering the costs of annual trips to Bloomington and Newark.

February 2010:  Freshman Year Experience Conference

Books & Beyond presented at the FYE conference.

January 15, 2010 – January 18, 2010: Trip to Newark, New Jersey

Students from Indiana University traveled by bus to visit their writing partners at TEAM schools in Newark, New Jersey. To watch a video recap of the weekend, click here.

December 2009: Max’s Place Fundraiser

Books & Beyond participants and Bloomington community members came to enjoy music and food while contributing to the project.

December 2009: Kickstarter Fundraiser

Books & Beyond created an  on-line fundraiser account through Kickstarter.com and raised over $5,000.

December 2009: Books & Beyond Fundraising Presentations.

Over $15,000 raised through the Fund Development Team’s efforts.

October 23, 2009: Rwanda Trip

 Professor Beth Samuelson and James Kigamwa travel to the Kabwende Primary Center to complete the story writing process with the Primary 5 and 6 students.

October 1, 2009: Celebration of Collaboration: Books & Beyond Kick-off Fundraiser at Village Deli
Books & Beyond participants and community members met at the Village Deli for the annual kick-off event.

October 1, 2009 – October 3, 2009: NCA Trip to Indiana University 

NCA Students visited Indiana University to meet their writing partners and begin the second year of Books & Beyond.

September 9, 2009: Dine & Donate Fundraiser: Mother Bear’s PIzza, Bloomington

 $2.00 from each large pizza ordered went to Books & Beyond. Over $100 was raised through this Dine & Donate.

September 5, 2009: Books & Beyond Call-out meeting

 Several Indiana University students came to learn about the project and Global Village alumni came to speak about their Books & Beyond experience.
